I know it’s different, but I have a cat who will be 14 this year who has gone blind with age, and it has really changed our relationship. Like this video, she relies a lot on sound, though since she is slowly losing her hearing, scents are now her main source of finding things.
I find her sniffing the air a lot, and I use different things to direct her over to me, or to help her find her way around. Luckily, she remembers the layout of our place, so she can find her way around pretty good. But yeah, dealing with a blind animal really is different, especially one that could previously see. Still, she is the sweet, gentle and trusting soul she’s always been, and I’m just trying to make the rest of her life happy.
They are so beautiful. I live in a coast redwood forest and this is their home. One of them caught on one of our trail cams was wearing a collar. We asked (tracking) authorities about it online and they told us that (considering the territory) they know who it extremely likely was. We’ve photographed/videoed another without a collar coming up the same path (& camera) along the creek.
I once saw one in person while I was outside (just a few miles from home in this coastal mountain range). It was walking away from me and in my peripheral vision, I spotted a couple of deer and gathered that I’d likely interrupted someone’s breakfast plans. I was so excited about my close encounter! I love these incredible beings!
