Got into a ball of silversides once while diving. Amazing, totally disorienting – had to close my eyes. I was so fascinated and the moment so rare (for me), it didn’t occur to me ’til later that SOMETHING forced them there. Still think about what it might have been…
A good view from undersea… I always fishing from the boat and saw this feeding frenzy many times. One incident when I hooked a bonito reeling in a few metres from the boat then coming from underneath at an instant and great speed a huge marlin probably 4 metre in length pinned it and hauled the bonito on its nose 2mtrs above the water. I lost the bonito with the marlin.. Wish I caught that rare moment on cam to show it here…
Based on all these BBC videos, this small fish swarming tactic maybe works out 1 out of a million times. If anything, they would be better off breaking off into 10 or 20 smaller groups and making a break for it in all directions. Sure, two or three smaller pods may not make it, but most of them will escape.
I’m impressed and surprised by the noise all this makes. That last shot where the yellow tail eats the dead fish sounds odd, though I guess the audio recording was amplified to have a stronger effect. thanks for these images !Just read an article about Attenborough saying there was a second series in the works. Can’t wait already although it will take years to get all the footage, especially the pelagic stuff.
