I think this might be a territorial display or mating dispute. The cats threaten and yowl at each other, each one trying to get the other to back down and run away. These threat displays often allow predatory animals to settle disputes without actually fighting and taking the risk of getting hurt. (maybe humans should learn from that!) These two look well matched, which is likely the reason for the intense display. This is an amazing video! I can well understand why the person filming it sounds so thrilled, this is a once in a lifetime sight.
For those wondering why they’re doing this. I googled so you don’t have too. “Lynx are largely solitary animals, but if two males do meet during mating season, a screaming match can result. When it comes to courtship in the animal kingdom, frogs peep, crickets chirp, and cicadas click.”Love their discussions. What you wrote up above about territorial dispute, that was what I was actually thinking. That is too much!! Thank you for sharing this once in a lifetime video. Count yourself lucky you were able to see and video this for us. I would have been totally thrilled to be there in person just taking in on what was happening.
Heard something like this in the woods in my backyard tonight and it freaked me out. Haven’t heard it yet this season. Not sure if it was a fox, Fisher cat, or possibly a lynx. I’m in Connecticut. Noise freaks me out but it’s fascinating. It was definitely two of them I heard.
