We invariably assume that older human civilizations were more primitive than ours and more primitive going back in time. The only question in the Dyatlov Pass incident is why they panicked, slashed open the tent, and left it, half clothed. Dyatlov used a Jerry rigged stove to cook and warm the tent. The weather was terrible, sub zero temperatures and blizzard conditions. I think the vent of the stove clogged with the snow forcing the smoke into the tent. Unable to see or breathe, they could not untie the frozen ties, so they cut the tent. Once out, only partially dressed, they walked, together, to the nearest tree and lit a fire. The weather did the rest.
