In case you’ve never heard a lion roar in real life, it’s actually scary because not only do you hear it, you FEEL it. Physically with your body. Every time you approach the lion exhibit at the Bronx Zoo and one of them roars, you can feel the vibration beneath your feet as you are hearing the sound. Same thing with driving through the safari at Six Flags in New Jersey. You can be a mile away from the lions when they roar but the car still shakes and you can damn well hear it.
As someone who lives in a country with a population of roaming freely in national parks, the craziest thing about these roars is that they are heard from multiple kilometers away. They are so loud and they carry so well that even though it might sound like a lion is close to you, it’s actually quite far away. But the most terrifying is waking up to this in the middle of the night while camping in the wilderness.
Used to live in Zimbabwe and every time we would go to a national park and stay a few nights you’d be able to hear this. You couldn’t see them and it was usually as the sun was going down or coming up but it was by far one of the most spectacular things vie ever experienced. I still think about hearing those roars echo over the savannah.
I heard it once on my own ears. I was so far away that I even didn’t see the lion, but the roar was so powerful I felt it physically in every cell of my body. I’m not kidding. it was terrifying but also amazing at the same time. It made me think: the king has spoken.
I heard the lion down at Wikiki beach roar, and I was several meters away. I could not tell where he was. Was he in front of me, behind me or left or right of me, even above me. The sound is so unique and loud that his roar sounds like its coming from all directions. Really loud, deep, other worldly, weird!
