Video Captures Man’s Intense Reaction To Being Bitten By Ants With The ‘Worst Pain A Human Can Endure’

A man ended up in the hospital after participating in a ritual that involved enduring multiple ant stings, and the experience went about as well as you might imagine.

Exploring different cultural traditions can be eye-opening and rewarding, but some experiences are definitely not for everyone. This ritual? I think I’d pass.

Australian comedy duo Hamish and Andy are known for their wild and bizarre stunts, but one of their most extreme moments came when Hamish willingly subjected himself to a swarm of bullet ants.

Deep in the Amazon, the Sateré-Mawé people have a rite of passage that is as mentally challenging as it is physically agonizing.

According to National Geographic, boys as young as 12 must wear gloves packed with bullet ants for a full 10 minutes while performing a ceremonial dance.

The ants, known for their excruciating stings, unleash their venom over and over again.

Hamish decided to give this a go, and let’s just say he probably regretted it almost immediately.

In footage uploaded to their YouTube channel back in 2014, Hamish can be seen reacting instantly as the ants start stinging.

His screams and frantic movements show just how intense the pain really is.

The Sateré-Mawé encourages him to push through the agony, insisting that he must dance despite the unbearable pain.

See for yourself:

Some might think Hamish was being dramatic, but when you understand just how powerful a bullet ant’s sting is, his reaction makes perfect sense.

The insect gets its name because its sting is said to feel as painful as being shot.

Considered one of the most agonizing insect stings in the world, the bullet ant’s venom can leave a person in pain for up to 24 hours—hence its nickname, the “24-hour ant.”

The pain of a bullet ant sting is said to be 30 times more intense than that of a bee, and some even claim it is the most excruciating sensation a person can experience.

Andy later broke down how Hamish responded to the experience, and unsurprisingly, it looked as painful as it sounds.

Hamish went through six distinct stages of agony:

  1. Uncontrollable shrieking
  2. Flat-out refusal to dance
  3. Screaming and swearing
  4. Profuse sweating
  5. Violent shaking
  6. Begging for a stick to bite down on
And despite all that suffering, he still had to take a one-hour trip to the nearest hospital.

Even after eight hours, Hamish was still feeling the effects. He later summed up the ordeal in one word: “unbelievable.”

But honestly, his face in the video tells the whole story—words aren’t even necessary.
